Last week I taught a comics class at the Animation Workhop in Viborg. This week’s podcast is a summary of some of the things I taught – and learned myself! The main theme is choice: what kind of choices you need to make before you start drawing, and what you can do to make the process easier for yourself. As usual, your host is writer/artist Palle Schmidt.

great stuff Palle. it was a little tough to hear the recording from your class but you did a good job repeating what the students said so the info wasn’t lost. The cooking metaphor was perfect and as a person who cooks and makes comics, it really “hit the spot”. Just try to cut up the ingredients you need for your stir fry after the meat is in the pan. Something’s gonna get messed up.
i have recently started a new comics project and unlike my first one, I have the ending in sight before i began, plus an outline , a rough script, and lots of story boards. I am drawing my pages literally 4 times as fast with less erasing and more satisfaction. Because i already have script and story boards, I can even skip ahead if i get hung up on a drawing so my progress can continue.

Michael, it’s thrilling to hear your progress! So great to hear from someone who broke down a barrier and get some momentum and free flow in their process. Congrats!
Yeah, I think the cooking metaphor really works. Nothing worse than having to run to the store while the roast is burning!
Thanks for your feedback and support, Michael. Much appreciated.
